「流しの枝」

地唄「流しの枝」のお稽古を始めました。

行き暮れて木の下影を宿とせば
空に知られぬ雪ぞ散る

花の枕に吹雪のしとね
にくや嵐のあてことを聞いて流しの花の枝

ほんに男の気ばかり汲んで
一夜まる寝の添い臥しに
言わぬが言うにいや勝る
花や今宵の主ならまし

Hauta “Branches on the Flow”

“Overtaken by darkness, I slept underneath the tree,

then I realized that it was snowing.

With a pillow of flower petals and a bedding of snow,

now a storm is setting on as if it is mocking me, which I let it pass with flowery branches.

About the night that I spent trying to understand

the feeling of the cruel man

shall be better left unsaid.

Here flowers are the master of the night.”

一ノ谷の合戦において討ち死にをした平家の武将で、平忠度（たいらのただのり）という方がいます。

清盛の末弟であり、武道にも歌道にも優れていた忠度は、討たれたとき、箙に歌を結び付けていました。

「行きくれて木（こ）の下かげを宿とせば花や今宵の主ならまし」

彼は、都落ちした際、従者6人と歌の師であった藤原俊成の屋敷に舞い戻り、自分の歌が収められた巻物を託したところ、俊成は自身が選者であった「千載和歌集」に、次の一首を詠み人知らずとして掲載しました。

「さざなみや志賀の都は 荒れにしを 昔ながらの 山桜かな」

平家物語から本歌取りをした「流しの枝」、平家は、一時期、福原から四国は屋島、西日本一帯を拠点としていたと言います。

端唄ものとされるこうした曲にも、平家の公達を哀れに思う人の心が現れるのかしらと思いました。

Tadanori Taira is a warrior from Heike clan who lost his life in the battle of Ichinotani in the 12th century. He was the youngest brother of Kiyomori, the head of the Heike clan back then. When he was killed, he tied his below poem to his armor.

“Overtaken by darkness, I slept underneath the tree, there flowers are the master of the night.”

I started practicing the piece called “Branches on the Flow” that applied the technique of “Honkadori”, a way of writing poems with quoted parts of an old poem, in this case the above poem by Tadanori.

These old popular songs are called “Hauta”.

People those times must have sympathized with young warriors of Heike a lot to create these songs.
